Savoring the Last Sips of Summer

Don’t make me say it... you and I both know August is winding down and fall energy is coming our way (pumpkin spice, sweaters, etc.). However! There’s still time to soak in the slowness and sweetness of summer before the hustle and bustle takes over. Even with weekends packed with weddings, trips, and celebrations, there’s power in carving out a little space just for yourself—without “shoulds,” to-do lists, or agendas.

I didn’t make it to Italy this summer (tragic!), but I’ve been lucky to find pockets of that slow, restorative summer energy closer to home: a slow morning in the city without plans, the calm of a lake weekend in Connecticut, misty mornings on Mt. Hood, and the oceanic expanse of Lake Michigan. And in the next week and a half, I’m looking forward to crossing a few more simple joys off my summer bucket list: finding an excellent lobster roll, savoring homemade ice cream, and spending time by a pool or beach.
Even if you can’t take a whole week of vacation, you can still gift yourself small pockets of summer joy. Here are a few gentle ways to press pause in the last stretch of summer:
A Mindful Moment: A few deep breaths, a quick stretch, or noticing the sky for a few minutes can instantly center you.
Savor Simple Pleasures: A bowl of ice cream, a good book, or a fresh peach—enjoy it fully, without distraction.
Water Time: Lakes, rivers, pools, or the sea! Even a few minutes watching water move can calm your mind.
Sunrise, Sunset: Take a few minutes to watch the day shift into evening, or get up early and catch the sunrise. Let the colors and light inspire you.
And if you're seeking a moment to reflect, ask yourself: “What do I want to carry from this summer into fall?” There are no wrong answers. It could be energy, calm, curiosity, or just the memory of these small, sweet moments.
The last weeks of summer aren’t about finishing tasks or packing everything in. They’re about honoring the beauty of slowing down and reconnecting with yourself. Even a few intentional moments can shift how you feel and remind you that rest and joy are always available—you just have to let yourself take them.
So, here’s my little challenge (and invitation) to you: in the next week and a half, go find that ice cream, chase that lobster roll, or dip your toes in the water. Let yourself wander, pause, and breathe. August is still here, and it’s yours.
